CurlFest 2016

Hey Guys!

I know I’ve been gone for a while – school got the best of me and right after I jumped into an internship, an on-going job search and volunteer activities like Curlfest. I am so happy I got the chance to be a part of the event. There is something so satisfying about seeing the evolution of a project you’re working on. I was part of the first shift which worked from 6am to 1pm. I helped set-up, prepare awesome gift bags and decorate and pitch in wherever need be. I think the best part of me were the goodies. Now if you don’t know, natural hair products can be a pit pricey and it doesn’t help that my hair likes the fancy stuff. I was already low on products so a swag bag filled with Shea Moisture, Carol’s Daughter and Mane Choice were just what I needed. I even got to meet Alba (Sunkissalba) who is litter my favorite non-toxic lifestyle blogger. Check out the video I made and a bunch of the pictures I took below! See you next year CurlFest

Most Likely To TAG

When I was at home, one of my best friends, Josh and I decided to film a video. We were watching Superfruit and came across their Most Likely To TAG. So we decided to do our own version. I left the questions we used below just in case you want to try them out as well!

Who Inspired Me to Go Natural?

I know I've been gone for what seems like forever (nearly five months to be exact) but I can't even tell you that I've been on some cool-ass trip around Europe or working on a makeup line. I've literally just been busy conforming to society with school. I really will try to get better at this but hopefully this post is a start. Make sure to read until the end and comment below what made you go natural or stay natural :)

This may come of fan-girlish but I am a certified Ariana Grande fangirl so that title doesn't faze me. Throughout my natural hair journey I've come up with a list of things and people that have inspired me. One in particular, I've never met and I'm pretty sure she doesn't know me but she is honestly the reason why I went natural in the first place.

I’ve read a lot of hair stories and many people planned to go natural. They educated themselves beforehand- prepped. For me it was an impulse decision. I was stuck in my house due to Hurricane Sandy and I happened to find Naptural85 while searching for new ways to tie a headscarf. I ended up clicking and clicking and clicking until I pretty much watched every single video she had ever put on YouTube (including her pre-Olivia vlogs). I couldn’t believe that all of that hair was hers. Grown out of her scalp. Naturally. Plus, I was one of those ignorant people who didn’t know black people could grow long hair (Seriously Sarah?).

While still being a newly loyal fan of Whitney I did turn to blogs that told me to wash my hair everyday and not use shampoo anymore. When I saw how simple Whitney’s regimen was I knew that I wanted to incorporate something like that into my routine. I’ve been a natural/organic-enthusiast for some time but I never knew you could use Greek yogurt or mayo in your hair until she taught me that. I didn’t even know what apple cider vinegar was before her. Now, some of my staple products are pretty much because of her and my hair loves it as well.

Let’s not even start on the hairstyles! Can we say gorgeous, fun and oh-so-helpful? I can’t completely emulate all of her styles because my hair isn’t long enough yet but I definitely use her as inspiration for my hair length. Whitney also plays a part in my whole virtual world. I knew that people with shorter hair looked on YouTube in search of hairstyles and that was pretty hard to find at the time so I decided to start my own project because of that. She also has style, DIY, beauty & daily vlog videos that I watch regulary!

It’s pretty great to see her hair and her channel grow in front of my eyes. I started watching her when she had shorter hair and I knew that all I needed to focus on was health (my hair motto). No matter your hair type or hair texture you’ll definitely want to get on the Naptural85 bandwagon (we totally need a squad name)! Make sure you click her links below (you won’t regret it) & click mine right underneath!

The Whisper Challenge

I’ve been seeing The Whisper Challenge going around on YouTube for some now and I finally got around to doing it with my friend Jalessa. The rules for this require one person to wear headphones and play music so that they cannot hear what the other person is saying. Then the other person reads a phrase and the other person has to get it. Basically it’s a reading-of-the-lips game.

I think we were both pretty confident that we would get all of them but you can obviously tell otherwise after watching the video. So if you have to whisper something to me from across the room – just text it to me. Click the photo below to watch it and don’t forget to subscribe to my channel because I have more videos coming!

10 Annoying Natural Hair Questions

I’ve only been natural for nearly two years and I have had my fair share of annoying natural hair questions. I got this list from Tamara for Natural Hair Rules and I thought that I’d answer them.

Can I touch it?

Quite frankly, this doesn’t bother me. I really have no problem whatsoever letting someone I don’t know touch my hair – just ask me. However, I don’t like someone reaching for my hair if I don’t know them and they didn’t ask. I usually have to tell people how to touch it. People’s instinct is to rake their fingers through but I warn them that it will get stuck. It’s cool because it’s different. My hair is different and people are curious about it.

Is all that your hair?

I recently got this question and I was like “wow” [in a good way]. Does my hair really look like it can’t be mine? I never know whether to take this as a compliment or insult. Are you saying it’s so nice that it looks like a bomb weave or can you not believe that I can have healthy medium-length hair? I usually understand that they don’t mean any harm and reply with a proud “yes” and smile. That usually leads to more questions, including number 1.

Is it hard to comb?

People close to me (family) ask me this a lot. I simply inform them that I just detangle and how I do it. I swear people think our hair break combs (well, if the comb is weak that could happen).

What made you do that?

When I first started I got this a lot. I told them the real reason: I just want healthy hair and perms don’t work for me.

Are you really natural?

I’ve never gotten this before. My mom does say that she’s natural just because her hair is poofy. I have to keep telling her that she’s not natural as long as she uses relaxers (which she does).

What is it supposed to be doing?

I’ve never gotten this but this is what I would be thinking: What the heck do you mean? It’s not a toy or an automobile. It’s hair. It just sits on my head.

Are you going to do/comb your hair?

My mom asks me this all the time! I’m usually just like “it’s done, leave me alone.”

How do you wash it/that?

I’ve dealt with the slick comments on the lines of “natural hair is difficult, you guys have vocabulary and too much of a process.” This is one of the most annoying questions because it’s pure ignorance. No, everyone (like me) doesn’t have such a intense regimen or follow all the steps from some blog. So what if they do? Their hair is healthy.

How do you get your hair to do that?

This is an awkward question for me. If I did some sort of style, like my usual puff – I can just tell them how I pulled it up and made it sleek. But when they want to know how my hair curled like that I really don’t know how to help because that’s just how my hair is. I don’t do anything for that.

Did you cut your hair?

LAWD! My top most annoying question when I had a TWA and did mostly was ‘n’ go’s. Nobody understood anything about shrinkage so very other day I would get this question. My answer was the same on Monday, it’s the same on Wednesday – stop asking.

My New Desk Decor

I live in a standard New York apartment. No, it doesn’t come with floor length walls and a modern kitchen nor do I have a high-tech shower or a terrace that looks over TriBeca but wherever you are, you can make your space feel like you. I am so frugal and that ties into my everyday life. I hate going on YouTube and searching for DIY projects and I only hear about materials from Target, Walmart & Home Goods (like seriously? Those places are not that cheap). Hopefully by now you have a sense of my style. I wanted to reflect that in my room. I don’t decorate often as I mostly live away on campus but I do still like to feel at home when I am there. I decided to go for a Chanel/girly/vintage/Parisian theme.

I’ve always liked the idea of stacked books on a table. I feel like the books represent your style. If you’re into interior décor, stack up some themed books. If you’re into fashion and beauty use those genres. I used my Seventeen Ultimate Guide to Style, Teen Vogue Handbook: An Insider's Guide to Careers inFashion, Lauren Conrad Style and lastly my quick DIY:

I used a hardcover cover book, covered it with plain white printing paper and traced the Chanel logo on it. I was totally inspired by Tanamontana100’s blog post on DIYTumblr nightstands.

Then I placed some knick-knacks on top of the stack. I used two CoverlGirl nail polish’s to act as Chanel polishes. I had this cube that my watch came in and I stuffed it with pink tissue paper and laid two necklaces in there for a classy display. It makes my jewelry look exclusive – even though it’s definitely not. If you don’t have that, you can use a bowl, teacup or something of that size. You want to keep everything along the same level. Then on top of the cube, I placed a white watch.

Next to that I have a little winter-y basket (that I want to change to something that resembles the ones from Les Merveilleuses LADURÉE) where I keep all of mascaras. Then on the other side of my table I kept it simple. I used an old frame and free-handed the Chanel “C” to spell Classy (you can always just print out a photo from the internet). It’s not quite done; I want to either add a bow or pearls to make it more Me. Then I used my teacup to hold my Maybelline BB Crèmes and Rimmel primer. I used the matching saucer to display my go-to Milani palette, a MAC blush (that I don’t use at all) and a Sephora gloss (that I don’t use either). To make it daintier, I added three of my essential gold rings from Forever 21.

Trader Joe's Beauty & Food Haul

Oh dear, I just love Trader Joe’s so much! I mean the taste, the quality and the prices – it doesn’t get much better. As I am packing to go back to school (a new school I might add) I’ve been dying to grab some infamous Trader Joe’s products. I don’t really like watching or doing hauls (so don't expect them) but I can watch Trader Joe’s hauls all day long (no, not really but you catch my drift).

I recently watched Tara E (on YouTube) and spoke about how she liked the tee tree cleanser. I’ve been using the Tee Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash from The BodyShop. It works well but it’s something I would need to keep buying and quite frankly I don’t have the money. I have read reviews about it being strong but most people said you should only use a little bit.

My friend Josh told me that they’re really good and I love anything mango. How could I go to Trader Joe’s and not buy their Cookie Butter? I mean, everyone raves about it. I couldn’t wait to try it! I pretty much stuck my [clean] finger in there and scooped it out. It’s so yummy! It does have a hint of ginger and it’s sweet. So far, I’ve only had it on a cupcake (sugar overload!) but it says you can put it on other pastries, waffles, pancakes, etc.

The tea lover strikes again! I feel like I should do tea reviews or something. At $1.99 I decided to try the Mango Black Tea. I’ve only used one bag – for the past 3 days. I mean, most people tend to throw away tea bags after the first use but you can reuse them until the flavor isn’t strong anymore. I love how I didn't have to add any honey but I might do so next time because Black tea is pretty strong. You can still taste [and smell] the mango though.

The Salted Caramel Chair Tea Mix smelled delightful. Of course I felt basic as heck because I swear everyone has to have Chai during the winter but whatevs. The best part is all you add is water because it comes in a powder form. It’s the normal salty/sweet taste that every salted caramel product tastes like. I think I’d like to try it with vanilla soy milk for a sweeter taste.

Tara E. mentioned using jojoba oil as a makeup remover (I use oil to remove my makeup as well) but I want to use it for my hair. Use it to take down my twists, add in Shea butter or use by itself as a sealant.

Cold-pressed coconut oil is the same but you can’t beat this price! The co-op near my house retails this at $10.99 so I couldn’t beat the $5.99 price at TJ.

What kind of naturalista would I be if I didn’t pick these up? Whitney raved about it and I’ve wanted to try it ever since. I bought two bottles of conditioner because one was not enough. I also picked out the shampoo. I’ll definitely review it when I try it out!

Bye 2014 ; Hello 2015

My biggest struggle this year was my lack of motivation. I would describe my life as a basic bitch (pardon my French but I had to). Nothing in my life excited me - at all. I would find myself constantly comparing my life to others; wondering why my time hadn't come. I would ask God, Jesus, the Earth, wind and fire why my success and full happiness hadn't come yet. Did I do something in my past life? Did I do something in this life? Or maybe it was because I was half-filled with negativity from being in a place I wasn't comfortable in. Whatever the case may be for now I'm going with lack of motivation and constant comparison. I. You - WE can't compare our chapters in life to someone else's. My mom brought up a good point: some people have theirs come fast and easy but then they lose it and for some it comes slow; but when it comes slowly - it lasts forever.

This year I pray for patience. I need to learn to be patient. Now that doesn't been I'm getting off track. I want to take my blogging and creative content more seriously. This has been a challenge before because I always looked at how many people actual read my blog, watched my videos and answered my questions via Instagram,Facebook or Twitter (which wasn't a lot). At this point I'm just going to continue doing things that make me happy and make my followers happy. That way, it'll only lead to more happiness [for everyone].

Also, did you notice the title? Yes, I have changed the name of my blog and the URL will change soon after. I'll give you a brief explanation but once my URL changes, you'll get a full explanation:

"...Last time I tried this I lost so many followers in a couple of minutes. But I am so done stressing about the number of followers I have. I rather have people that support this project than people who don't. I am not changing anything in regards to content - just the name..."

P.S. Thank you to all those who do support me and I only hope you will continue to do so.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Meeting ThatsHeart, Bare Minerals & Washington Square Park!

Hi Loves!

I had a terrific Friday! After work, I met up with Keionda in NoHo. We made our way over to SoHo to check out the grand opening of the Bare Minerals Shade Shop on Prince St. One thing that I love about Bare Minerals is that there is a wide selection of shades to choose from. As a person with a darker complexion it's fustrating to only have one shade to choose from. Not only was there a grand opening event but beauty vlogger, ThatsHeart was having her first meetup. If you know me, you know that I love beauty gurus and I jump on the chance to meet and chat with them. She said she loved my hair and I can't tell you how excited I got. I also got to meet her boyfriend and YouTuber, Arnold. After the event we walked back to NoHo and drank some really yummy natural iced tea at Washington Square Park where we had a small convo with a wizard, watched people mediate and soaked up some New York City vibes. We also went to Sephora as we are in the process of building our makeup collection. I really enjoyed my Friday, how was yours?
